Google Maps New Augmented Reality Feature Allows You To See Walking Directions

The new feature uses Google Street View data to establish your orientation

Google Maps is getting a new augmented reality feature that could completely change how you navigate using the app.

The feature allows you to see walking directions overlaid on the world itself, rather than looking at a blue dot on a map.

It works using Google Street View data, combined with the usual GPS location tracking, to identify what you’re seeing in front of you and point you in the right direction.

So as you come out of an underground station, for example, you will hold up your phone to take in the surrounding buildings.

The images you capture using your smartphone’s camera will be compared with Google Street View images in real time to establish your orientation.

As you turn around, big blue arrows will appear on the screen, over the live image of the real world, showing you which way to walk.

A preview of the new feature is rolling out to all Google Pixel smartphones – including the new Pixel 3a – today.

To use the feature, open Google Maps on your Pixel, then enter your destination and tap on the walking icon.

From there, tap on the “Start AR” button and follow the instructions on the screen.

Once your location is determined, Google Maps will place visual signs and arrows around you, helping you work out which way to go.

Google said the feature only works outdoors, in areas covered by Street View, where there’s a good data connection.

As it relies on the camera’s ability to recognise building and signs around you, it will not work in low-light environments.

There’s no word yet on when the new feature will roll out to Google Maps on other devices.
