Casualties were recorded as a steel fabricated bridge in Gubi campus of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University that links the lecture hall and hostel collapsed in a heavy rainfall. The metal bridge which was a regular passage way for the students, had several students on it as at the time the downpour began causing loss of lives . The school has currently been shut down by the school authority for two weeks. The angry students have largely blamed the school authority for its negligence despite appeals to repair the bridge.
The vice chancellor, Professor Muhammad Ahmad AbdulAzeez said: “I regret to announce the death of four of our students. The unfortunate accident that led to the demise of the students occurred late last night (Tuesday) at Gubi campus of our university.
“While the full details of the occurrence are being awaited, the university senate, at an emergency meeting, has decided to close the school in honour of the students. The reopening date has been fixed for August 19.”
The administrator confirmed injuries of varying degrees on seven others.
