Researchers in Québec, Canada, are drawing attention to the need to increase corporate responsibility with regards to recycling.
As part of the public consultations on the project to adapt the 2020-2025 Residual Materials Management Master Plan (PDGMR) in which Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ) is contributing to, is highlighting the need to increase corporate responsibility in order to achieve the common goal of recycling all of the materials recovered in Quebec.
“In the current crisis, the status quo is not an option and EEQ welcomes the commitment of the City to adopt ambitious targets to contribute to the development of effective circular economy recyclables in Quebec says Mathieu Guillemette, Senior Director, Municipal Services at ÉEQ.
“The modernisation of the selective collection system is essential, and its success is based on an increased role of companies in the management of recyclable materials, in partnership with the municipalities. ”
In its report to the public consultation on the PDGMR, ÉEQ highlights three vital factors to contribute to the transformation of the Quebec selective collection system:
- Take into consideration the modernisation of curb-side recycling at the provincial level, as well as the increased role that will be played by companies marketing packaged and printed products
- Base decisions relating to the use of products and materials on eco-design and on rigorous analyses to ensure that you make informed choices
- Exercise municipal powers in the best interest of the selective collection system according to a new legal and regulatory framework and a renewed partnership between the municipal world and businesses.
ÉEQ is a private non-profit organisation representing companies that place containers, packaging and printed matter on the Quebec market in their responsibility to finance the costs of municipal curb side recycling services. ÉEQ optimises the curb side recycling value chain and implements innovative approaches, with a view to sustainable development and a circular economy.
