The Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE) on Tuesday appealed to its members to evolve strategies through hard work to tackle the problems of electricity in the country.
The NIEEE National Chairman, Mr Kings Adeyemi, made the appeal during a virtual inauguration of the Governing Council of the institute.
Adeyemi, also the Chairman-in-Council, advised NIEEE engineers to think outside the box to proffer solutions in line with its constitutional mandates to the nation, while reeling out the responsibilities.
“I advise all council members to put aside self and pursue national development, knowing fully well that electricity is a major component that transforms the economy.
“We need to formulate policies that can place NIEEE on the front burner of engineering affairs in this country.
“We need to bring our slogan, “NIEEE Setting the pace in Engineering Excellence into limelight.
“I want to let us know that NIEEE cannot be the same again. Let us imbibe all round discipline and ensure that we register our footprint in the sand time of life,” he said.
Adeyemi stressed the need for the new council members with robust expertise to hit the ground running to recover lost time needed for rapid development in all local governments across the federation.
“This composition is what I consider as real council, comprising experts from the academia, all the geo-political zones, all the divisions of electrical engineering, old and new generation, government and private sectors.
“All eyes are on this Governing Council. Permit me to inform you that the expectation from this Council is high. Therefore, we cannot afford to fail God on delivering our mandate.
“For your information, I love studying and working. Therefore, I welcome you all to work. I want every one of us to make NIEEE a point of interest.
“Our past leaders had laid strong foundation with remarkable achievements.
“We need to make NIEEE relevant in all the 774 local government areas of Nigeria, and ultimately having our landmark in every home.
“The Governing Council is a colossal task for its members, but the outcome really worth it. Being a member of Council will cost you your time, influence and other resources,” he said.
The chairman explained that the Governing Council was the second highest organ of NIEEE saddled with the responsibility of formulating policy and providing strategic organisational directions for the institute.
He quoted various sections and articles of the institute’s laws, which empowered him to champion while reeling out the requirements for selection as well as responsibilities of chosen council members.
Adeyemi challenged the 15-man Governing Council to help actualise two major projects, which include the attainment of Chartered status for NIEEE and the construction of its Abuja complex.
“My Vision is to see a new NIEEE as a professional body of high reputation, setting the pace in the face of emerging technologies.
“In order to realise this vision, we need to change our mind-sets and begin to reason out of the box”, he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Council appointed Mr Felix Adegboye, representing all the Chapters in the South-West geo-political zone as the protem Council Secretary.
Other council members were Mr Ikechukwu Amalu for North Central, Mr Eddy Ebruke, South West; Mr Mohammed Adam for North East, Mr Abdullahi Sulaiman for North West chapters, among others.
The council also constituted a six-man Committee to develop Corporate Governance, Code of Ethics, Codes of Conduct and Meetings Code of Conduct for the institute.
The Long-term planning and Medium term strategic framework are responsibilities of the governing Council
