The use of copper technology has decreased drastically in recent years due its bandwidth limitation and connectivity problem across networks. Fiber optic cables on the other hand have the advantage of better reliability, higher bandwidth and longer distances but are greatly limited by energy and power supply problems. Although power emitters can be used to boost the power supply problem of optic fiber cables, overhead cost makes them extremely uneconomical. Since energy and power optimization solutions have taken center stage in today’s technological advancement, Free Space Optics (FSO) proves to be the best alternative for communication. FSO has advantages of high bandwidth and no spectrum license making them faster and more economical than fiber optic cables. In this study analysis on different parameters of system design to minimize these losses due to fog and smoke was carried out. Presentation of the analysis of internal design parameters such as diameter of receiver aperture, diameter of transmitter aperture, link distance was done. Finally was to propose optimized suitable parameters for system design. Optimization of the FSO link at data rate of 2Gbps and link length of 800 meters was achieved using On-Off keying (OOK) modulation.
