The National Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers has called on the Standards Organisation of Nigeria to liaise with relevant stakeholders to develop a curriculum on standards to be taught in schools, especially in tertiary institutions.
He made this call during his investiture as the 20th National Chairman of the institute.
According to him, the country was lagging in standards development and there is a need to speed up the process by encouraging the teaching of Standards in schools. This he said will help create awareness and interest for standards development and also narrow the gap as more professionals are involved.
He mentioned that no country can grow economically without technology and no country can grow technologically without engagement in the development of engineering standards. Nigeria is only represented in two technical committees on IEC while country like China dominates all the over 1000 technical committees.
In the same vein, Engr. Richard Adewumi, Assistant Director, Management Systems Certification also decried the poor attitude of our professionals towards standards development. He said his work now is to market SON and its activities and called on all members of NIEEE to join the technical committees and workgroups to be part of standards developments. He eulogized Engr Akan Michael who he claimed has been committed and diligent in standards activities over the years and hope that his assumption of office as the national chairman will see more involvement of NIEEE in standards activities.
The immediate past national chairman of the institute Engr kings Adeyemi believes the new national chairman will cause the institute to do more in standards development having been involved in its activities for years. He further stated the importance of standards in national development and call for greater collaboration.
