The NEMSA Meter Generation Museum/Gallery is designed to showcase the evolution path of electricity meters in Nigeria from a simple electromechanical electricity meter to Advanced Meter Reading (AMR) and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI).
At the commission of the museum in Lagos at the weekend, the Minister of State, Power, Dr. Goddy Jedy-Agba disclosed that the project is the first in the South-West region and Nigeria at large.
According to him, the development aims to educate Nigerians on how electricity meters used to be during the pre-independence era in Nigeria; the several evolution steps as a result of technological advancement; where it is today after the Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSR) 2005 and a perception of what is expected in the near future.
While he said that the development brings the historical timeline of electricity meter generation closer to the people of Nigeria and the world at large; he mentioned that the facility will be used as a collaborative launch-pad in the power sector for lecturers, students, tourists and electricity users, to enhance their knowledge in evolution of meters.
In his welcome address, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NEMSA, Engineer Tahir Aliyu stated that the overall aim of the museum, which archives all the generation of energy meters ever used in Nigeria is to educate Nigerians.
Also, the CEO of Petebel Systems Engineering Services Limited (PSESL). Engineer Peter O. Ewesor in his remark said the museum of generation of electricity meters and instruments was conceived and executed for the storing and preservation of all types of electricity meters and instruments ever used or deployed in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) dating to the 50’s.
