NESTEC 2022 PAPER: Incorporating Artificial Intelligence And Power Electronic Devices To Revitalize The Nigerian Power Sector

Abstract

This work covers an improvement upon hydropower supply in Nigeria.  The major problem plaguing hydro-plants is the slow turbine rotation of the hydro turbines, which in turn causes unfavorable voltage fluctuations. Fuzzy Logic Control was employed to provide the solution, by using membership functions to analyze and increase slow turbine rotation. A model was employed using fuzzy software tool to control Hydropower Generator speed. Power transmission control was improved with the incorporation of Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS). The type of FACTS controllers employed in this report are those based on voltage sourced converter (VSC), particularly the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM), and also solid state var compensator (SSVC). Data gathered from previous research on the Nigerian 330kv transmission network show that the system is weak with power losses and voltage fluctuations from faulty buses. A MATLAB/Simulink model was employed to observe the results of application of these FACTS devices into the 3330kv National Grid. The results show that the devices greatly improved the voltage stability of the network and improved power loses.

    Apart from the use of Fuzzy Software tool to control hydropower generator speed, what other methods can be used?

    1. Hello Adeleke Wasiu, thank you for your question. A simple PID controller can be used can be used to send signals for turbine generator speed control.
      Ideally, a speed governor is used to control the speed and output power of a hydro power plant. The essence of the paper is the use of fuzzy inference system to identify faults in turbine operation and send appropriate signal to the governor to take significant action.

          Code like this will either fire or not, depending on if the antecedent is valid. But fuzzy logic code might resemble something like this

          For fuzzy systems, the consequent fires to a matter of degree.

    1. Thank you for your question Claire. In theory, yes it can be applied to other power generation systems. There are other controllers that are in use in power grid networks and various power plants, but the advantage of Fuzzy Logic is that is an AI controller whose efficiency depends on the expertise of the user.

    1. Good evening Mr. Simon, and thank you for your reply. Yes a very intelligent observation. FACTS technologies are a promising technology in power transmission based on power electronics. They help to increase the capability of current transmission lines, as well as improving the stability. They do this through high speed electronics control of ac transmission line parameters. The reason I didn’t emphasize much on this is it has already been covered and explained to great detail by different researchers.

    1. Good morning sir. These parameters that guide the operation of transmission systems include series impedance, shunt impedance, current, voltage, and phase angle. They are very important because they govern the operation of the whole transmission system.

  9. Thank you Pere for your question. There are various causes of poor power supply in Nigeria, but in the context of this paper, it is attributed to slow rotation of hydro turbine, which was improved with fuzzy logic control.
