FG Ready To Concession 6 Hydropower Dams

The Federal Government through the Ministry of Water Resources is set to concession six hydropower dams through Public Private Partnership (PPP).

The Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu stated this on Tuesday while declaring a workshop with the theme, “Effective Utilisation of Impounded Water in Dam Reservoirs” open in Abuja.

Adamu said the participation of the Private Sector in the utilisation of water impounded in the dam reservoirs across the country should therefore be encouraged.

He said the deliverables from the effective utilization of the water impounded in the dam reservoirs are expected to sustain Nigeria fast growing population through water and food security.

This according to him will also ensure youths employment in the farms and agro allied industries that will spring up, thereby enhancing the standard of living of Nigerians

“The Federal Ministry of Water Resources in pursuit of the agenda of the current administration has recorded some achievements in the area of concessioning of some hydropower projects through Public Private Partnership (PPP). The 30MW Guara Hydropower Project and 40MW Dadin Kowa Hydropower Plant concessions are at implementation phase.

“Some other Hydropower Projects under the PPP are at procurement phase. These include the 40MW Kashimbila Hydropower Plant and 136MW Manya Hydropower project both in Taraba State, 182MW Bawaku Hydropower Plant in Benue State as well as the 40MW Kiri Hydropower project in Adamawa State. The participation of the Private Sector in the utilisation of water impounded in our dam reservoirs across the country should therefore be encouraged,” he said.

Adamu further assured that the workshop will chart the way forward in the utilisation of the water stored in the dam reservoirs across the country.

“I am strongly convinced that the outcome of this workshop will impact positively on the economic growth of the nation. The deliverables from the effective utilisation of the water impounded in our dam reservoirs are expected to sustain our fast growing population through water and food security,” he said.

Also, the Director, River Basin Operations and Inspectorate, Mr John Ochigbo, while welcoming delegates to the workshop said dams have the potential of boasting the socio-economic life of a Country through the provision of water for domestic, agriculture, industrial, hydro-power, flood control, recreation and environmental sustainability.
