The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said the deficiency of Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul capabilities is one of the constraints to the sector’s operations in the country.
This was disclosed in a statement by the minister’s Chief Press Secretary, Ekerete Udoh, recently.
During his inspection of facilities at the Victor Attah International Airport on Tuesday, Keyamo expressed his concern, emphasising the urgent need for a dedicated MRO infrastructure.
The minister stated, “This facility is remarkable. One of my initial priorities upon assuming office was recognising the necessity for a world-class Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul facility in Nigeria. What I’ve witnessed here fulfills that requirement.
“One of the problems hampering the operation of the aviation sector in Nigeria has always been the lack of facilities such as this. Our aircraft will go out of the country for maintenance and maybe be there for months.”
With this facility, Keyamo held that the ministry can conserve foreign exchange to meet their international obligations.
“There are two projects currently ongoing here: The new international terminal building and, of course, the MRO. It’s not just a terminal building, what I am seeing here is a hub.
“It’s a proper hub where we can process international passengers and transfer them from one section to the other for them to catch their international flights. What we have here is a hidden jewel, but it’s all for the good of our dear nation,” he added.
The minister affirmed that the international terminal had fulfilled all criteria for certification as an international airport.
“The commitment to this project has been extraordinary. I will coordinate all agencies within my ministry and regulatory bodies to ensure you receive full support.
“We are confident in your ability to maintain international standards. The Director-General of NCAA is present, and we are ready to provide our utmost support. I express gratitude to Governor Eno for the passion he has demonstrated towards this project since assuming office,” he asserted.
