The Technical Committee meeting on environmental testing draft standards held recently at Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Laboratory Complex, Ogba, Lagos where a total of 35 of the drafts were adopted to be considered for the status of Nigerian Industrial Standards. The IEC 60068 series contains fundamental information on the environmental testing procedures and severities of tests.
In a speech delivered by Engr. Richard Adewunmi, Group Head of Electrical/Electronic Standardization, on behalf of the Director General, Mr. Anthony Abuloma Osita, he mentioned that the expression “environmental conditioning” or “environmental testing” covers the natural and artificial environments to which specimens may be subjected and exposed to in practice so that an assessment can be made of their performance under conditions of storage, transportation, installation, and use.
The standards are intended to be used in those cases where a relevant specification for a certain type of product (electrical, electromechanical or electronic equipment and devices, their subassemblies and constituent parts and components), is to be prepared, to achieve uniformity and reproducibility in the environmental testing of this product, he posits.
Prof Tolulope Akinbulire of the University of Lagos who presided over the Technical Committee commended the effort of SON in adopting the draft on environmental testing standards which he said was very important and long overdue.
