Watch Out: Samsung Galaxy Home Smart Speaker Will Finally Launch In April

Samsung has finally revealed when its long-awaited Galaxy Home smart speaker will become available.

DJ Koh, CEO of Samsung Electronics, told CNET that the voice-activated device is set to launch in April.

However, it still remains unclear how much the device will cost users.

The Galaxy Home was noticeably absent from Samsung’s Unpacked event in San Francisco on Wednesday, which included the launch of the Galaxy S10e, S10, S10+, S10 5G and the firm’s first-ever folding phone, along with new wireless earbuds and smartwatches.

The Galaxy Fold, Samsung’s bendable smartphone, is set to launch April 26th.

So it makes sense, then, that Samsung could be targeting an April debut for the Galaxy Home.

Samsung first took the wraps off the Galaxy Home, which is equipped with its Bixby voice assistant, at the Galaxy 9 Note launch last August, then further teased the device at its developer event last November.

Though there’s no word yet on the cost, rumors last year suggested it could be comparable to Apple’s $349 HomePod.

The Galaxy Home is a vase-shaped device perched upon three metal stilts. Its flat top has an array of control buttons that will let you skip tracks and change the volume, according to the Verge.

WHAT IS THE GALAXY HOME?

The Galaxy Home is a vase-shaped device perched on three metal stilts.

It comes equipped with Bixby, Amazon’s voice assistant.

That means it can automatically sync with smart home devices that use Samsung’s SmartThings technology.

Users can turn off the lights, play music and start the dishwasher just by using their voice.

The device was first revealed last August and, since then, Samsung has remained tight-lipped, beyond revealing it would debut in April.

Samsung says it’s built for ‘amazing sound and elegant design.’

As with its competitors’ speakers, the Galaxy Home can also be controlled by voice commands.

To wake it up, simply say ‘Hi Bixby.’

According to Samsung, the Galaxy Home is equipped with eight far-field microphones, built-in subwoofers, ‘sound steering,’ and audio tuning.

Samsung first confirmed rumors of the speaker’s upcoming release back at Mobile World Congress back in February, when CEO DJ Koh said they’d be releasing a device in the second half of 2018, CNET notes.

At the time, Koh said Samsung planned to ‘focus on more premium,’ suggesting its upcoming speaker would be geared toward a high-end market like Apple’s HomePod.

But according to the reports, the speaker could have different pricing tiers, with the potential for more affordable versions available alongside a premium device.
