IFC’s Lighting Africa To Leave Nigeria. Energy poverty is a bigger problem in Sub-Saharan Africa and in Nigeria, there is energy poverty but we are rich in oil and gas, Mr Nwankwo Allwell, Program Lead, Lighting Africa, Nigeria said this during a stakeholders workshop held in Lagos for the adoption of IEC/Lighting Global standards for Pico PV products and stand-alone solar kits.
The workshop is being funded by International Finance Corporation, IFC, under Lighting Global, a World Bank Group’s platform to support the sustainable growth of the global off-grid lighting market in order to increase access to the 1billion people without grid electricity.
Allwell mentioned that while Lighting Africa will leave Nigerian in June 2020, he allayed the fear the program will be abandoned as Nigeria Electrification Program, a sister program will build on what Light Africa has done. Allwell assured that when they step aside, they would hand over the template to Nigeria Electrification to build on what has been established.
Lighting Africa has been working with IFC to take electricity to the unserved and underserved in Sub-Saharan Africa through the use of off-grid energy as a sustainable solution to energy poverty. The workshop was in partnership with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria
