If you want a new iPhone but can’t afford to fork out vast sums of money, you might be pleased to know there’s a new update on the way – and it’s totally free.
It will be almost like having a brand new iPhone – without the giant iPhone-shaped hole in your bank account.
Here’s what you need to know about Apple’s iOS 13 update.
iOS 13 will be available on Thursday, September 19, as a free software update for iPhone 6s and later.
So if you have an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, you won’t be able to upgrade to the new version. If you have an even older phone, such as an iPhone 5s or 5c, you will also miss out on the update.
Interestingly, Apple has admitted that not all of the features of iOS 13 will be available right away.
The company will release a second update – iOS 13.1 – on September 30, to fill in the gaps.
Dark Mode
Dark mode is a new colour scheme designed for low light environments, which is easier on your eyes and won’t disturb people around you.
The colour scheme is integrated throughout iOS, and can also be implemented in third-party apps.
It can either be turned on manually, using a new button in the iPhone’s Control Center, or scheduled to turn on and off at a certain time or based on sunrise or sunset.
iOS 13 brings Apple’s new game subscription service, Arcade, to your iPhone.
Subscribers will be have unlimited access to a catalogue of over 100 new, exclusive games, all playable across iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac and Apple TV.
An Apple Arcade subscription costs £4.99 per month and is launching with a one-month free trial.
Sign in with Apple
A new way to sign in to apps and websites quickly and easily using the Apple ID you already have.
No more filling out forms or creating new passwords – just tap “Sign in with Apple” and verify your identity using Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone.
Sign in with Apple works on all your Apple devices as well as the web and apps on Android or Windows.
You can choose whether to share your email address or get Apple to create a unique email address for you that forwards to your real address.
Look Around is a new Google Street View-like feature in Apple Maps that gives you a 360-degree view of any place on the map.
In fact, the whole Maps app has been rebuilt from the ground up, and now includes more realistic details for roads, beaches, parks and buildings.
Users can create a list of “favourite locations” for quick, one-tap navigation to places they visit often, and also share these locations with friends and family.
There’s also real-time public transport information and flight status, improved Siri guidance and new place cards that can be dynamically updated with information such as cinema screening times.
Camera effects
iOS 13 lets you virtually adjust the position and intensity of your studio lighting.
You move the light closer to your subject to smooth skin, sharpen eyes and brighten facial features, or move the light away for a more subtle, refined look.
There’s also a new Portrait Lighting effect called High-Key Light Mono, that lets you create a classic look with a monochromatic subject on a white background.
Photos app
Apple has revamped the Photos app in iOS 13 to make it easier to browse through all the photos and videos on your iPhone.
You can now view everything in “All Photos”, or filter by day, month or year, with Apple using machine learning to highlight the best images and hide “clutter” such as duplicates or screenshots.
Photo previews are larger to help you distinguish between shots, and you can zoom in for a closer look, or zoom out to quickly scan through your library.
Live Photos and videos also begin playing as you scroll, bringing your photo library to life.
Photo and video editing
You can now control the intensity of any filter you apply to your photos, to fine-tune your look. This includes the “Enhance” tool, which automatically adjusts things like contrast and brightness.
There are also new photo editing tools such as vibrance, white balance, sharpen, definition, noise reduction and vignette.
Meanwhile, new video editing tools let you rotate, increase exposure, or even apply filters to your videos.
Video edits are now nondestructive, so you can remove an effect like a filter or undo a trim to return to your original video.
Memoji customisation
New Memoji customisation tools let you create new makeup looks using blush and eyeshadow, add braces to you teeth or piercings to your nose, eyebrows, eyelids, and around your mouth.
There are also 30 new hairstyles, over 15 new pieces of headwear, and more earrings and glasses.
Apple has created three new Animoji characters – mouse, octopus, and cow.
The iPhone keyboard now includes QuickPath typing, so you can swipe your finger from one letter to the next to enter a word without removing your finger from the keyboard.
You can swipe or tap to type interchangeably, so you can choose what’s most convenient even if you’re mid‑sentence.
