NESTEC Paper: Sustainability In Renewable Energy Production In Nigeria; A Materials Engineering Perspective

Abstract

Satisfying the ever-growing demand for energy in a sustainable, eco-friendly and economical way has been a major challenge of the 21st century. Trends have shown that sustainability, economy and eco-friendliness depends on the deployment of materials which thanks to continued technological innovation, evolves continually. As such, materials, therefore, play a very important role in the quest for this development unequivocal to the fact that the features of our modern industrialization are our escalating extravagance of materials. Globally, the world’s primary energy production is; oil, coal and gas as a major source of environmental pollution not ruling out its short life-span. As such it is imperative for a developing country like Nigeria in the bid to conform to global practice on pollution and secure the future of the energy sector to embark on the quest for sustainable energy. This paper attempts to render the interrelationship between materials and the quest for sustainable energy while highlighting how a country like Nigeria can tap into it as both a solution to current power issues and as recourse for future energy development.

I then suggest this article receives extensive attention because it invariably points the needs for even Nigerian government to reinforce its existing initiatives by developing an integrated nenewable-energy plan for sustainable development.

    How will you view the economic viability of this approach in terms of contributing to the energy need of an “averagely living” Nigerian as against that of the conventional oil and gas, owing to the fact of the steps taken by the oil industry to curb carbon emmisions!

      My views on the economic viability of this approach towards affecting the average Nigerian is Paramount.
      The Nigerian energy sector is very pivotal to our economic growth making it one of the leading back bone of her prosperity. But, we have therefore limited our sources of energy which affects the Nigerian persons with less in positivity and more of negativity.
      Having look through this and therefore, stating these kinds of approaches which is verifiable, we can therefore, increase the sources of energy to affect all which we may term “energy for all”.
      This can be achieved thus by us tapping into the various sustainable energy listed.

      With regards to the various ways sustainability affect the country positively, the energy sector as stated, is a one of the backbone or rather the major pillar of our economy. but these sector has limited it energy source unaware of the fact that there are various ways to improve sustainability in the energy production. More so, is the fact that sustainability is a key to economical growth/improvement. Cited in the essay is the plans for Nigeria establishing 4 nuclear power plant which is a major established emission-free energy source with low trace of carbon content. The benefit of this type of energy are numerous such as, creation of over a thousand job during construction with many high paying jobs when in operation. Nuclear power plants contributes millions of Naira to both the local and labor economies.

          How can we forget nuclear waste?… Fistly, sophisticated materials are made to contain this nuclear decreasing waste disposal not leaving the fact that nuclear waste can be recycled and re-use as fuel in other nuclear plant.

  11. Good morning brother, I hope you’ve had a good night rest? Reading through the paper, I felt some questions running through my mind and yearning to escape the citadel of my tongue. Being an electric power enthusiast, I couldn’t help but to weave these questions for you:

    1. In engineering dogma, we are taught that every project we should chase should be realistic and economic, now tell me how the generation surplus can be utilized in a country like Nigeria, a country which cannot even cope with the burden of the present supply. Is it then realistic?

    2. Are you explicitly saying that generation is the power problem of this country? If yes, then how?

      1. All progressive economies in the world have one thing in common – ability to meet energy demand. One of the reasons why manufacturing sector is suffering is because of inadequate power. Over the years, many international firms have left the country because the country cannot meet their energy requirement. Besides no business wants to make losses in operation. Dangote and the likes have their own power generating plant which is abnormal considering what happens in advanced economies.

      Have you ever sat down to calculate how much a road side hair dresser would have made in a day if he/she doesn’t use generator. A visit to popular markets like Aba, Onitsha and Lagos will paint a better picture.

      Power is a major factor of production. As such for we to progress, generate enough jobs and help small scale businesses, Nigeria needs to start meeting her energy needs. Fortunately we can rely on renewable energy like solar and wind as we are blessed with the natural resources, but do we have the materials? I will leave that to you.

      2. With regards to if power generation is the countries problem? I will say not really, rather our ability to sustain the energy generation. The country is blessed with natural conditions that can meet up to our energy demand. But that’s not the case, it is if we can be able to sustain the energy as well as not hampering the future generations without affecting the economy negativity if more energy generation is established. It’s of this course the horizon of this research was established. The materials engineering perspective of sustainable energy production in Nigeria.

    Don’t you think section 3.1 is meant to be independent and more elaborate?

    And what are the empirical approached used in your paper to efface electricity problem in Nigeria.

    Oscar, you did a great work, as it speaks volumes of the roles of materials engineers in the power sector. But kindly provide the answers for better clarity.

    Section 3.1is just a stated opportunity and with the emergence of Nanotechnology which therfore, serve as a gimmick to the stated opportunity.

    Sliding through the various sustainable energy stated. It’s is based on verifiable fact.
    Take for instance the ESG (enhance geothermal system) which is not available in Nigeria and as cited by Grunt, it can be extablished due to our blessed geothermal areas. Now this is to remind you that my work is based on the interrelationship between materials and sustainable energy which I quote” no materials no energy”. It is therefore now our priority to tap into this for out future can.

One of the primary renewable energy abundant in supply is solar enargy and its primary harnessing tool are Solar PV systems. These are semi-conductor materials which currently is not produced anywhere in Nigeria. How do you advise we develop the capacity to manufacture this all-important component?

    1. Thank you Mr. Benson for reading the work. With regards to the question stated;

      No country is blessed with all the minerals needed to manufacture all the part of most electronics. United states of America and most European countries depend on China for rare earth metals used in electronic devices. DR Congo is a major supplier of cobalt used in making lithium ion batteries yet they don’t have a battery factory. Same goes with Australia and Chile with regards to lithium. However, what some of these countries like China did is to look at what they have and import the rest.

      As such, I will advocate that that a mineral exploration mapping be carried out to know what we have and what needs to be sourced from other countries. Nigeria is blessed with a lot of undiscovered mineral deposits.

      Secondly, one of the primary factors for voyage into solar energy is abundant supply of sun which thank God, we have in the North. Few years back, the government proposed the production of solar panels in a research institute at Abuja. If my facts are right, they even trained some people. Today, I don’t know if the dream is still alive. Queensland in Australia has about 300 days of sunlight and to tap into this, the government subsidized solar installation making it easy for people to go and get one.

      We have the capacity to produce, but we need to know what we have, what to import and train manpower to produce the solar panels as well as encourage people to buy solar panels by subsidizing the price.

      With regards to the statement and the questions;

      Everyday new and much more improved ways of doing things are developed. We started with poly olefin sourced polymers, but today we are looking for biodegradable and renewable polymers like poly lactic acid (PLA), cellulose based ones, starch etc. Sports cars now used natural fiber reinforced polymer composites as parts of the vehicle. In the energy sector, use of fossil fuels is quite common, but is it sustainable? No. So we now look for more sustainable options like use of solar, wind, biofuels etc. which are more sustainable and ecofriendly. All these search towards sustainability have one thing in common – material development. Without the deployment of semiconductors, their would be no solar panels today, without the use of lithium based compounds, hand held mobile phones and the dream of electric vehicles will still be mere wishes. Same goes for other areas. Technological advancement is more or less a quest for sustainability and this can only be achieved by deployment of new materials.

      Energy efficient buildings are buildings that produce the energy they consume. Solar panels are there to supply electricity during the day, batteries are there to supply at light but overall the building is designed to consume the least amount of energy possible. Thus the architecture is also important especially with regards to the lightening of the house and ventilation.

Meeting Nigeria’s demands for new energy sources in a sustainable way, not leaving behind the eco-friendly conditions will require the action of bringing resources into effective action of orders of magnitude more renewable energy system than are available currently. Known to us is that, the word the world’s energy economy is built upon a base of metals, and the sustainable energy economy is more critically dependent
    on a wider array of metals than the current one. It is essential that the materials necessary to implement these potentially game-changing technologies
    are readily available to the diverse industries engaged in those markets.

    2. Materials have increased the energy efficiency of today’s buildings in several ways including Low emissivity glass, significantly lowering the initial investment costs for heating and cooling, compact fluorescent lighting and light emitting diodes (LEDs), reducing lighting
    costs and heat loads, Cool roofs, saving energy, high efficiency fiberglass insulation. Areas of further research and development square measures-many opportunities exist for materials advances to reduce the energy use and atmospheric emissions attributed to the building sector. The energy and cost performance of walls, roofs, windows, mechanical systems, and on-site renewable electrical and thermal systems can all be improved through advances in materials. Phase change materials capable of storing or releasing large amounts of
    energy in the walls, floor and roof, thereby saving energy and smoothing the thermal profile, optical materials and photonic crystals potentially enabling optical engineering using structured inorganic nanomaterials to positively influence the solar gain and provide long term durability, electrochromic, suspended particle and liquid crystal glasses responding to occupants and external conditions to actively control both light and solar gain.
