IEEE Day 2019

The IEEE Day 2019 held at the New Engineering Lecture Theatre, University of Lagos, Akoka was nothing short of inspiring and a celebration of engineering across board. From sharing about the advantages of the discipline and the opportunities it presents for students, professionals, and the society, participants at the event listened to different talks from experts, IEEE members, and a WIE representative.

A representative of the IEEE Engr. Austin Duru gave an overview of the benefits of tapping into the wealth of knowledge that can be gotten from IEEE. Cleaner ways to generate power, communication and power, control and instrumentation especially in the oil industry, industrial application (automation) are all applications of the Electrical Engineering field, these he stressed while admonishing the student participants of the IEEE 2019 event. He went further to emphasize on how the knowledge acquired from studying and research in this field can be used to innovate and solve persistent issues in the society. He spoke on the importance of electrical engineers to a vast number of fields, while encouraging students to get active with the society.

Also speaking on the need to become active participants in the field and the IEEE in general, Dr. Adelabu who gave the keynote speech encouraged students to get as much as they can from both the classroom and through the society’s events and activities. He urged the students to focus not only on what they can gain for themselves but to put effort into ensuring that others can gain from it too, this he said to establish the point that there is a need for students to revive and grow a student-run association and society within the campus environment. His speech ended with him stating that he “looks forward to seeing a vibrant student branch of the association”.
