ABSTRACT
Nigerian Engineers in recent times have been lagging in terms of invention and innovative ideas when compared to their counterparts in developed countries. Technological developments keep waxing stronger daily in all fields of life, ranging from communication and information technology, medicine, transportation e.t.c. At a time when climate change has become a very critical issue, World leaders keep meeting time after time to discuss on ways to minimize, if not completely eradicate the burning of fossil fuels which is considered to be the primary cause of climate change or global warming. Engineers in developed countries through researches finally arrived at the construction of Electric Vehicles which is environmentally friendly to replace cars with an internal combustion engine. This paper proposes and examines the urgent need for Nigeria Engineers to key into construction and maintenance of Electric Vehicles and charge stations.
Keywords: Electric Vehicles (EVs), Charge stations, Climate change, Fossil fuel.
Author: Iheme Chima Otuodi
This is a very relevant topic of discussion, however, it’s noted that references are not properly cited.
Thanks you sir for the correction

This is a good paper but it needs to be edited for a few errors and also the references need to be properly arranged.
Thank you sir
Your points has been noted
Nice write up.
But to my point of view,do you think constructing of this electric vehicle can help and in what aspect
Thank you Favour
Considering the concept for my paper which is combating climate change which is undeniably affecting the Nigerian Populace.
Electric Vehicles will help minimize the carbon footprint and hence Prevent global warming.
Good
Whaaaat
Anyways thanks
This isbGreat.
Keep it up
Thanks Ade
Great
Nice write up but permit me to ask you few questions:
1. Do you feel Nigeria need this sector of making Electric vehicles looking at the collapsed state of the economy?
2. Is this view a future approach or thought or what you feel is demanding today?
3. How do you think the budget of Nigeria will be able to finance this project judging from the fact that Nigeria is at the verge of borrowing trillions of dollars again?
4. How much do you think this project will cost if looked into?
5. Would be nice that other pressing issues like good roads, infrastructural amenities, good education and other pressing issues are looked away for the sake of this project that you propose?
Thank you so much Mr Clinton.
Firstly
What attracts investors to most countries is electricity.
Let’s look at the current state of the country in terms of electricity, the supply is insufficient.
Now from my paper you see
V2G: This means that the vehicles have the capacity to feed electricity to the national grid. If over 11million vehicles that pollute our environment are replaceed with electric vehicles that supply energy to the grid, the electricity in the country will improve.
On the issue of finance, Nigeria has no reason to borrow because of her natural endowments but we have selfish and greedy leaders who mismanage funds. To effectively promote production of these vehicles, government can go into partnership with private sectors.
The future is now, if we dont take action now developed countries we use Nigeria as a dumpsite for fuel dependent cars while theymove on with electric vehicles.
Lastly transportation is part of infrastructure and this is where my writeup lies.
Once again thank you
Nice one brother i’m very happy to read these.God will increase your wisdom, great scientist
Thanks
I would also react to this your write up that it is indeed a very good one but i will say that it is more of a want than a need for Nigerians because there are so much demands that needs the attention of the government and as such, i wont in my little capacity encourage the government to go into the thought of executing this project at the moment because we have so much that has yet to be handled. The likes of insecurity insurgence, the likes of making our policies work, the likes of looking at the poor economic issues of the nation, the likes of looking at our mining sector that would eventually produce the needed materials that will be needed for component production. Well, it is a good proposal in my own thought. Thanks
You can our President alongside other World Leaders meeting to address climate change.
Go to the Chad basin, bro u go pity people living there.
50years ago, this sun was not as heating as today and in 50years time, if nothung is done bros nobody go fit come outside o.
Global warming is caused by emission of greenhouse gases of which CO2 is a major constituent.
The need to reduce this gas is urgent and Electric Vehicles will help .
Brother we need to save this country from imminent disaster caused by global warming
Thanks once more
A famous scholar once said “You can’t do same thing the same way and expect different results”
You said insurgency?.if I may ask, is Nigeria the only country with insurgency??
2. Why are the policies not working??
3. Ajaokuta steel how far???
I repeat
Nigeria has the capacity to produce Electric Vehicles.
Even the fuel dependent vehicles, how many has Nigerian government produced?
Innoson motors is a not government owned.
Your reference to government at all points is why the nation is not progressing.
Private companies can make this vehicles. It must not be government.
Nice write up sir
Thanks president
Sighting the economic benefits of the PIEV would have been more appreciated from my own point of view, but nevertheless, I was able to make sense of this paper, though am not technically included as an engineer which is why think this paper would fly anywhere easily.
Thank you
Reading your write up is really enriching.
I summed up the totality of problems facing the implementation to two bits
1. Adequate power source
2. Reliable income source
This are material things that can be tackled if presented on the right platform.
Please tag @innosonmotors on this. Grow locally and I’m sure they would provide a solid footstool to make this a reality. Alternate power source like solar power could also be stabilized and regulated to yield results.
In my honest opinion this is attainable within a 2-3 years Target with a good team 👍
Nice work sir.
My submission!!!
Well said.
Nice wan bro
Thanks Moore
Thanks Ache
Thank you sir Lawrence
Power supply will not be a problem since through the V2G these vehicles can feed energy back to our grid.
Reliable income source, the charge providers will mostly benefit from building charge stations just like petrol station hence income is stabilized
This is a very awesome and reasonable essay……it needs to go viral
Thanks
Help make it viral
Nice write up,But how can the dey be innovative and creative when our government is not encouraging and promoting the product that comes out from Nigeria
We can actualize this sir by promoting it
This article is great, more wisdom and knowledge I pray for you sir

Thanks Igono
Nice one bro but Nigeria is still lagging behind when it comes to advance technology as in this case. She can boast of manufacturing even the cars we are using and the electricity system is also poor. Though, its a nice topic
The problem we have is leadership and poor attitude towards tech innovations
Nice write-up bro, this will bring about transformation to the country
Yes boss
It is a wakeup call
Nigeria is long overdue for technological advancement…..the air pollution from fossil fuels is adversely affecting its consumers on a daily basis….thumbs up to the writer of this piece
Thanks Pass
To save this country from climatic doom we must act now
As a country we are still lagging behind in technology
Great work though
More knowledge
Yes Biola
That’s why we must act now
Very good tech innovative idea… But then sir, in cases of when the power is exhausted, is there a secondary means of powering such cars… ?
Thank you sir Frankline
In case of power failure, the internal combustion Engine is signaled to provide support.
This is a good article
Kudos to the author
My question is how can this reduce global warming?
Yea
The three chamber system prevent CO2 emissions
A very good paper
I wish Innoson motors can see this and save Africa from being a dumpsite for fuel cars
Thanks Mr Eneji
Help share this till Innoson sees it
Hello sir. It is a privilege reading through this piece. But whilst reading, I stumbled over some few questions I’d want you to attend.
1. You’ve mention that voltage instability is a shortcoming of the EV in Nigeria which is an obvious fact. Do you then think the research is feasible to the Nigerian environment?
2. The vehicles are expected to draw large amount of power as you stated therein. How do you think with the present beggarly power supply of Nigeria the vehicles can be used?
3. In the USA, tecnology-giant companies like Adobe and Google are investing into the technology by building charging stations. In Nigeria, do you think we have these kind of investors that would help the process to be realized? If not, then how do you think it is realizable?
Thanks.
Thanks Abdul
The first two questions are solved through smart grid system and v2g as exolaned in the paper. Evs return Power to the grid through wireless means.
Lastly such projects will definitely attract investors.
Great read.
Thanks Zubby
Nice one… The abstract is compelling. I hope the beneficiaries of this research work & policy makers utilise your recommendations soonest. Thumbs up bro.
Thanks
Help promote
This looks very promising. Please keep up the good work.
Thanks bro
Nice writeup sir , its really enlightening
Thanks Tech D
Mr. Iheme:
Your write-up is an interesting one! I always ask questions, hope you don’t mind the following:
I can’t see any diagram or schematic/illustration to show the mechanism of a PHEV
Secondly, What are the functions of ICE, fuel tank, and the exhaust system in a plug-in electric vehicle? Why are they used there?
Lastly, is the system actually sustainable?
The frictions responsible for motion don’t you think it will emit particulate matter into the air and cause air pollution? This is what I mean, the tires or ICE the materials they are made from, if it wears, those particles that wears off where do the go? The air right? And am sure internal combustion engine do emit poisonous gases… So it the system actually sustainable?
I stand to be corrected.
Thank you very, Mr Iheme! Your response would be well appreciated
Thank you Harrison
ICE provides alternative power in Case of low battery hence only little emission is seem here.
The system rejected my schematic diagrams
Sustainabu is sure as the system is mainly electric dependent
I believe ICE means internal combustion engine, right?
Why using an internal combustion engine in something you titled plug-in ELECTRIC VEHICLE? Do you combine both electrical and mechanical energy to obtain mechanical energy (motion again)
In terms of sustainability, I don’t think a system that combines such is sustainable. I mean, what’s fuel tank doing there if it’s an electric vehicle? Ok. If it’s because of low battery why not find a way of increasing the efficiency of the battery instead of switching the energy gap…
How can it be electric dependent when I saw ICE, FUEL TANK, AND EXHAUST SYSTEM?
Think about it brother. This is a technical paper. Thank you!
Thanks Mr Eze
A good engineer does not rely on a single solution to a problem.
ICE stands as plan B.
Looking at ICE only vehicles, what happens when your fuel finishes? If you are far from a station, it becomes a problem.
Comparing to a Plugin vehicle, a plugin vehicle starts on electric mode not fuel mode bro
Read the paper through you will get more knowledge
Owk. I leave it to you sir. But remember the functionality and economics still remains an essential part in design.
You are right Sir
May it interest you to know that the EVs are less cost effective in terms of operation than normal vehicles
Nice writeup
Thanks Sanni
Good day Iheme..
Nice work you got here. But I need clarification on the following;
1. I believe ICE cylinders has an exhaust chamber due the fact it runs on fuel, so I want to know if the gas released from this exhaust are not poisonous too the atmosphere.
2. Is the batteries used for this plug-in vehicles same as the conventional batteries?if no? What will happen to it’s efficiency when it dies?
3. Are you saying that building this plug-in vehicle is Nigeria’s challenge? Or is our current energy status, lack of skills that makes it a challenge?
4. What is a three way catalyst system and how does it minimize emissions?
5 how can we benefit from such vehicles? I.e, will an average Nigerian be able to afford such vehicle with such systems in it?
Thanks.
Thanks Oscar
1. The gases are neutralized by the è- way catalyst system
2. The batteries are rechargeable
3. As Nigeria join other nations on the fight against climate change, these vehicles become a challenge to us as a weapon
4. 3-way catalyst system neutralises Nitrogen oxides, unsafe hydrocarbon and CO2 in EVs
5. With mass production they become affordable
I hope I answere you
Thanks
4.
This is extremely illuminating…
God bless your initiative BENNY…….I support you…
Thanks baby
Going green is the only alternative to save the world from the effect of global warming.
This paper is coming right at a time that the world is trying to diversify from fossil fuel to other source of renewable energy which is advantageous for many reason as outline in the paper above. Electric vehicle is the best alternative to take in going green to effectively combat climate change. This paper is superb for its content and structure.
Go Green bro
Together we can
Nice article (Daramola Oluwagbemiga Favour) at this level. Though there is room for improvement. However, you have shown enough research ability and quality as an undergraduate student which will be very useful in your future endevour. Congratulations!
Am surprised sir
All the same thanks
Nice one bro
Thanks bro
Interesting and creativity, more of this in future to come
Thanks Seun
Thanks bro

Thank you Toyo
We can promote this simply by sharing
This is a beautiful research work
God bless your work
Thanks Esthy
Good findings at proper timing
Thanks jenny
Thumb up
Thank you so much
Nice ob boss Chima.
I want to ask, How can this be creative, looking at our country now, they are not encouraging at all.
How can we make this happened , who are those that we stand out to make this work.
Today, our country don’t value anything than social activities.
Thank you Chris
It begins with you and I
Engineers bring solutions to problem.
Private organizations can partner with government on this.
Awesome
Thanks Easy baba
This is a very good project proposal. Though sometimes, being a Nigerian in a country called Nigeria might seems like casting shadows over reality of things ought to be and yet, we see it not happening or working here. I’m not being sarcastic please.
We are blessed with the brightest minds in the world, yet we’re not making a desired progress but we tend to flourish elsewhere. So, we know we have a problem.
Both government and people really need to change their mindset and be patriotic enough in taking the responsibility to make d country better and hence improve the quality of people’s life. Let’s all create an atmosphere where people sense of belonging can be restored.
Best regards, Iheme.
Yea boss
This why Nestec is here to build up on our attitude towards tech innovations
If you can dream it, you can achieve it!
Yes
Its possible
Nice works.. Keep it up
Thanks pirro
Nice one. Keep it up bro
Thanks Kelvin
Is climate change the same as global warming
Scientists have determined that the major factors causing the current climate change are greenhouse gases, land use changes, and aerosols and soot.
Yes you are right
Yes Timi
They are both the same
What do you mean by onboard charger
They are used to charge the vehicles without charge station
Please What do you mean non linear characteristics
It means the characteristics are variable
It means the characteristics are variable i.e changing at intervals
Do you think our roads are compatible for such vehicles
Of course yes
How is electric shock prevented in these vehicles
Boss
The vehicles are properly insulated against shock
Nice paper Chima …I believe with more arduous research and government friendly policies- both on power and automobile,we’ll b on the same pace as our western contemporaries . Wish u God’s blessings in ur endeavors.
Thanks Mr Precious
Do you suggest a ban on Convetional fuel vehicles?
Most obviously
YES
At what rate does the battery discharges
It depends on degree of usage
Please what are vehicle accessories?
They those components such as the air conditioner and MP3 players
Electric cars are being talked about in some countries, while some countries have it already. For Nigeria, we still struggling with constant power supply. The only means electricity generation in the country is the hydro electric generated through the dam. As I believe it not in the place of government to sponsor such project as electric car, it is in their place to provide enabling environment such as constant power supply. It is 2019 and we cannot boast of 15 hour constant electricity and the little that is generated would now still be diverted to power stations to provide for electric car? There are investor who would move in this direction if the problem of power is solved.
May be we should start with looking a means of generating power before delving into what electricity could be used for.
In all it is good write up.
From his paper, these vehicles can also add to our grid system hence improving electricity
Thanks Mr Sule
@Micheal: Electric cars can improve power supply too. We just have to wake and start thinking differently
Can solar energy charge these vehicles
I have seen such vehicles using solar as source of power
Thanks Sule
You are right
@Jane: Solar can also be utilized thus involving renewable energy as mentioned in the article
Thanks Sule

Thanks once more
Beautiful write up sir! I am really engrossed in it. Keep up the good work, may God see you through
Thanks pressy
What happens when there is power outrage whip charging the vehicle
I think the vehicle will remain on ICE till charging starts.
Just a guess though
Beautiful answer from Sule sir!
The vehicle will be pn ICE mode @Richard
How do we encourage the promotion of these vehicles
Simple!!!
Spread the paper
Thanks Sule
What are charge stations
Just like your fuel station, these are places where the vehicles can be charged
Great job !!
Thanks Gifty
Electricity is an important social amenities
Thanks Oge
How then can electricity be improved in Nigeria
Thanks Blessings
Nice job Bro
You have insight
Thanks so much Sule
Weldone.
Nice article
Powerful I sight u
What makes this a challenge to Nigerian engineers
We need to start thinking technology and compete with other countries on development hence it is a challenge to us
This is great and nice keep it up
Thanks
Well done my brother,, Very important to know that there is an urgent need for Nigeria engineers to key into construction and maintenance of electric vehicles and charge stations,,
Good luck dear
Thanks so much sister
Nice job👍
Thanks Esthy
Nice engineering review. Wish we could get more of this for more enlightenment.
Nice write up. A must read for all engineers
Nice essay, I love the content and I’m interested in seeing illusion come to reality. Thanks
Nice one the Lord be with you.
Nice one, bro
What an awesome write up.
I will advice you Chima to improve on your write up in the case improper in-text citations and proper referencing style
Also, your work lacks some vital diagrams that would have better communicated your ideas to your readers instead of just ordinary write up.
My question on your write up is that, what capacity of electricity will be required to power this vehicles and what capacity of electricity can they supply to our Grid.
I also encourage you to do more reviews on your work as your contents are too shallow; one sentence explanation.
Another question I want to get an answer for is that what are your views, prospective solutions and recommendations to all the problems of PHEV in Nigeria and don’t you think there may still be more problems aside from the ones you stated in your write up.
Thanks Damola
Firstly PHEvs require 10-56kwh of power and this same power goes to the grid
Secondly the diagrams I uploaded were rejected by the system.
Lastly there are zero to few if any, of these vehicles present in Nigeria hence the motive behind the write up.
Please APA format is does not prohibit cita as used my me.
Once more thanks
Thanks Damola

Iheme, thanks for your article. I have some questions I would like you to shed light on.
1. Gasoline Tank – Are they necessary after internal combustion engine is replaced with battery driven engine?
If so, then we cannot totally dispense with hydrocarbon.
2. Why is exhaust necessary after fuel is dispensed with?
Thanks Mr Victor
A PHEV is not independent of internal combustion engine, it has a fuel tank because it actually needs fuel to operate but the idea is: the combustion engine is only necessary when the battery is low. As written on the paper, the vehicles start on electricity but in cases of power failure the ICE is triggered to operate
The exhaust system is designed so as to neutralize CO2 and nitrous gases through the system known as three way catalyst.
Hi Chima. Great paper. Anyone following the general trend knows that the future belongs to the electric vehicle. However, the availability of electric power when needed is centre to its relevance as a transportation solution. Our dear country Nigeria is currently grappling with epileptic power supply. How do you propose we go round the power supply problem if we embrace electric vehicle solution for urban transportation (as China is currently doing with 400,000 electric buses)?
Thanks Sir Benson
Now here is the logic: electric vehicles only require about 10-56Kwh of electricity which I believe our nation generate even far more than.
But the most interesting part is that these vehicles also add an equivalent of the power to the grid through a system called V2G (Vehicle to grid) thus also improving electric supply
Mr. Chima,
How many passenger can these vehicles accommodate?
Thanks sir Kay
It is the same as the conventional fuel vehicles
It is a nice one, it isn’t easy to write about something tangible like this. More ink into your pen and more wisdom and understanding.
Thanks
Congrats. Commendable work.
Why is plugin electric vehicle (PEV) a challenge to Nigerian Engrs? How can PEV achieve zero-emission when it is in hybrid with ICE?
Poor referencing both listing and citing.
Thanks Tolu
First, Presently in Nigeria there is no company producing these PHEVs. That is why its a challenge.
Secondly the PHEVs are equipped with a system called THREE WAY CATALYST which prevents emissions by neutralization of the gases.
You did well sir.
I basically won’t drop my many questions here (time factor) but for the mean time; the first statement on your abstract to me, was rather “unfit” per say.
Cos you will believe me that there are much more innovative ideas Nigerian engineers have (students inclusive), but lack the governmental back up towards it actualisation.
Hope you get my view pont
I don’t sir
You should have asked why it is a challenge. Not saying it is unfit
Read through sir
Nice one
Impressive
Nice job bro
Well said. Keep it up bro
